Federal Grants-Pell Grants for College

Federal Grants-Pell Grants for College

Pell grants, one of the most beneficial government grants for college students, technically came into existence in the year 1972, after amendment of The Higher Education Act of 1965. The main objective of providing pell grants was to give financial assistance to college students for getting education. Over the years, pell grants requirements as well as the pell grant amount has gone through significant changes. Pell grants for college attending students are a source of great support for those students whose families come under the bracket of low income families.
General Facts About Pell Grants
Pell grants are federal government grants and are governed by the US government. No private authority or private firm provides them as it is purely a government effort.
Pell grants are given on a yearly basis and hence, you can only apply during each year you plan to go to the college.
Pell grants needn't be returned unlike loans from private firms.
For the year 2010 - 2011, the Pell grant amount has been fixed to be USD 5,550. Nearly more than half the students receive half of this amount, owing to several factors.
It is purely based on financial needs of the student. A student with the highest requirement of financial aid gets the highest amount of money but not more than the fixed amount, that is, USD 5,550.
The United States Education Department decides a student's eligibility for pell grants.
Federal Pell Grants for College Students: Eligibility Criteria
Knowing all about the eligibility rules to get these grants is crucial so that you can decide if you chances of getting help through this grant. To avail benefits of federal pell grants in your college, you must know about the following:
A simple formula that is used to calculate financial need of a student is:
Financial Need = Cost of Attendance (CoA) - Expected Family Contribution (EFC).
Cost of attendance (CoA) is the total cost of education and expected family contribution (EFC) is what the family can afford to pay. The net amount is taken to be the parameter for financial need.
The maximum limit for threshold EFC is USD 5,273. This means families whose EFC contribution is less than or equal to USD 5,273 are considered for positive pell grant eligibility. Closer the value of EFC is to zero, more will be the chances of financial aid.
Most important requirement for pell grants is that the student must be pursuing his studies in an undergraduate program, or teacher or professional post-baccalaureate program.
The student must not have any poor records of penalization or fraud in a federal or state institution.
Applying for Pell Grants
To apply for pell grants, students have to visit the FAFSA website and fill the FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid application form, that is the government's application form. You have to properly fill the form and ensure that nothing is left blank. Based on your application, your request for financial assistance will be considered. Just filling FAFSA form, doesn't qualify you for receiving the grant. In fact, after you've submitted the form, you'll be able to check SAR, or Student Aid Report, that is a document stating various eligibility criteria and EFC amount necessary for qualifying for the grant, in your specific case. Mention every detail asked in the form correctly as every detail is checked by the government. Don't attempt to hide any information as you may end up getting your application rejected. The Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, or SAFRA in 2010 introduced certain changes in pell grants rules. As stated earlier in this article, the pell grant amount has been raised for 2010 - 2011. Some other major changes are that, based on the parameter, Consumer Price Index (+1%), the pell grants for college amount will increase, starting from 2013. Moreover, pell grants may see more overhauling and changes every year, from 2010 onwards.
Pell grants for college students are one of the best grant programs in existence, till date. Students must be realistic while applying for this program. They must not forget that financial need is the major criteria. Hence, the student's income (if he is working) and the student's parents income (if the student is dependent on them) are vital parameters to be get pell grants. After you're aware of all points about these grants, apply for these grants and secure your education.

Things to Know about College

Things to Know about College

College years are the most important years of our lives, something that I realized in the final year. These valuable years and time never comes back and believe me if you waste it, you will repent, just like me. While in high school when you wonder which college to take, I would recommend you to seek two important things, one seek the college course that you like and the one that suits you. Two, try to get a scholarship of a Federal students loan by focusing on your grades in the final years at college. Once you have gone through your educational scrutiny and have been accepted at a university or college, you need to start thinking about your financial support such as student loans, government grants and scholarships. This is just a small aspect of the financial support during the college. Upfront and frankly, let me tell you one important aspect of the financial support of college, do not take any other loan than the student loan and also do not take up any credit card, for fast cash and extra cash, do odd jobs or part-time jobs. Here's some advice for college freshmen.

10 Things to Know About College

Here are 10 things that I realized while completing my Bachelor's degree...

Enjoy the Course: Among all the important things that everyone will tell you is, of course, study. Well, I would recommend you something different from what most people have said. Enjoy the course work, this is the best way to learn. Attend all the classes and thoroughly read all the books right from day one. Do not make it monotonous and boring, but make it a nice habit. Now the significance of doing this is that throughout the year if you study for some small volumes of time and attend classes, then your subconscious will naturally assimilate the knowledge, you will be able to 'sleep on it' throughout the year and studying for an exam becomes a piece of cake.

Read and Understand: Instead of 'boning up', copying or just glancing at notes and books, read as much as you can. In fact when you read, you understand and thus answering any question in an exam becomes more of a reflex action. Focusing on reading and understanding will make the course work very, very easy. No I am not talking about locking yourself in the dorm room for hours together, but 4 half hour sessions of focused studies for the entire year will prove to be very successful.

Schedule: College is not just about studying your course work, but is more like a preparation for the future, hence make a schedule for the day and try to stick with it. Allocate time for all the things such as sports, friends, music, etc. Basically, start becoming a good person who values time.

Fitness: Put in some good habits into yourself regarding health and fitness right from the first day, small workouts or even playing something such as baseball or football for a short time every day will help you to stay fit. Apart from that a good healthy diet, with a good amount of fruits and vegetables and less alcohol will keep you in good shape.

Know about Professions: You will be of course be thinking about a career in some or the other field. Start reading about famous and successful people from the fields in which you will like to work. This will prove to be a great passion builder for you and subconsciously you will start working towards some or the other goals.

Connections: Be the nice guy or girl on the campus, that is do not get into fights and even any psychological warfare. College is the best place to start building your image as a great person. This does not mean that you need to be with your friends all the time, just don't think negative of any body and that will do the trick.

Pray and Meditate: The human brain needs solace in some place hence you need to meditate and pray or just take a walk all by yourself to be quiet and peaceful for 15 minutes every day. Note that it states your constitution on the right track every day.

Teachers and Library: Be friendly with teachers, not to do something bad but the teacher community always sets your brain thinking in the right manner. Indirectly your soft skills would be sharpened and you will of course develop the right clockwork in your brain.

Persevere: Among all the things you need to know about college, one thing that you need to know is to persevere. College is not just about getting education but is phase that makes you ready to out in the world, patiently persevere is the best key to success.

Define Fun: There is always a lot of gossip regarding parties and raves and how 'chilled out' a specific year is, well do not believe any of those. True you will have a lot of fun, but as of course, let it be decent and in proportion. There is nothing such as a college guilt free wonderland.

College is a great time for all people to not just turn over a new leaf but also mold yourself as a person, it is with effect a preparation for the future. Among all the things perhaps the most vital is to be yourself and enjoy yourself. In the process, you will find joy.
